17 October - 4 November 2004
Elwin Buchel, the well-known and much sought-after doctor artist, is making a welcome
return to Pretoria. On 17 October 2004, at 17:30 for 18:00, he exhibits his latest
paintings and sketches, filled with exuberant colours and a zest for life expressed in a
delightfully free style, in the Mackie Street art gallery of the Association of Arts
Pretoria. His exhibition will be opened by Alan Dunn, Editor of Independent News Network.
After working for 25 years as a clinician at the Pretoria Academic Hospital, Buchel left
to live, work and paint in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates. Most of
his works reflect his sojourn and travels in the Middle East. Scenes from African rural
life add to his exoticism. Romantic places such as Muscat in Oman and Wadi Hadramaut in
the Yemen, inspired some of his lively and colourful paintings. An interlude in Cornwall
produced paintings and sketches of beautiful fishing villages. Elwin Buchel’s works have
an immediate and overwhelming appeal and will certainly enthral all art lovers.
The exhibition continues until Thursday 4 November at 15:00.
