Loeritha Saayman Martens - Solo Exhibition
24 July - 4 August 2005

Primeval Animal and its Environment

Loeritha Saayman Martens, holds a solo exhibition of mixed media works depicting landscapes and the human figure as well as combining organic and man-made objects, in the Mackie Street Gallery of the Pretoria Arts Association from 24 July 2005 until 4 August 2005. The exhibition is opened by Rudolph van Graan on Sunday, 24 July 2005 at 17:30 for 18:00.

The title of the exhibition “Primeval Animal and its Environment”, serves as a pseudonym of the artist herself and tells of her own life-experiences and surroundings. Some of the works are done in a surreal fashion in ‘subconscious spaces’ – and invite viewers to discover their own life stories. For instance broken cups and saucers portray the sensitivity and fragility of human emotions and a salt pillar the chance of being caught up in the traumas and sorrows of the past. In some works, reflexion becomes part of reality and serves as a metaphor for the shadows and doubts which envelop our human existence.

Loeritha Saayman Martens is a graduate of Unisa and spends most of her time, apart from her own creative work, teaching painting and drawing as recreational art.
