Pavane Art School Student Exhibition
15 January - 2 February 2005

Pavane Art School is a private art school in Nieuw Muckleneuk, Pretoria, which primarily consists of pre-school, and primary school children. Linda Hendrikz gave her first lesson 7 years ago to 4 children. Today the school boasts 140 students and a long waiting list of others who wish to enrol.

Linda has the exceptional ability of transforming art instruction into enriching learning experiences, where children are exposed to the work of well-known artists and art from diverse cultures in a relaxed atmosphere.

Art history and art appreciation is made accessible to the child through stories, legends and interesting facts. A holistic approach to each theme ensures that the student understands the era of each chosen artist. The little students are sensorially stimulated with the aid of pictures, books, music and videos.

The exuberance with which the students gave expression to their works of 2004 is especially noticeable. Artists serving as inspiration include Gustav Klimt and Piet Mondrian. Fish were the theme for silkscreen printing that was done on material. These work were colourfully combined into quilted tablecloths, which can also be viewed at the exhibition. Three-dimensional work includes angels, (a Christmas project), crosses (an Easter project) and Pandora boxes. Last mentioned project consisted of plain wooden boxes that were converted into exotic looking jewellery boxes with their own musical melody.

The most important work of the year is the mandalas that were made by the children. It is the richness of colour and symbolism that impresses the viewer in these meditative pieces.

Wilhelm Jordaan, emeritus professor in psychology and columnist for Beeld, will open the exhibition on Saturday 15 January 2005 at 18:30 for 19:00 and can thereafter be viewed:

Tuesday – Friday 09:30 – 17:30 and Saturdays 09:30 – 13:00 until 2 February 2005 at 15:00.
