DIANE VICTOR - STYLE, March 1990
Not a very vocal person - wouldn't be able to draw if drawings had voices.
And with this startling metaphor the self- confesses mute proceeds to describe her drawings with unconscious artistry.
' fascinated by the human figure, the human form in different spatial relationships and emotional interactions.
She is motivated by a strong negative response to the way people react to each other.
She also favor large figurative drawings of human figures sitting like lumps of rotting meat and harboring all these rotten desires inside - beautifully covered up of course.
Majored in drawing and etching -
The Cite is a large arts community where artists all over the world congregate to the ends of collaboration and creation.
When speaking of her Continental experiences, Diane expresses the sense of schizophrenia ( scheme for )
habitual to the artist in temporary exile.
She is a South African - and she work with South African images. - to take them away - her work will be insipid. ( flat - lifeless ) - uninteresting
This damn - country ( crime - endless) - is the energy spot, the focus of her work.
The only thing that saved her - was newspapers send by friends - news and articles - from here - tenuous contact was absolutely necessary.
A large alter-piece of the South African family with a Last Supper feel to it. The subject was initially inspired by the theme of family murder so rampant in our beloved country. However, for this artist - inspiration is only the beginning of the inkling of the genesis of work which she describes as " a kind of journey through the self".
" As I work my ideas change - start off with something small and graspable and then you are influenced by the images on the drawing block. I never come up with a preconceived image and then reproduce it like a photocopier. - often don't know what she is going to produce in the end. - Diane cultivates ' the habit of looking ' as a kind of inner goad to the process of introspection. People walking in the street, avoiding contact, a man screaming at his wife, items heard on the news or read in the papers provide the impetus for the images. - Diane is an artistic obsessive - draw all day - where many of her peers have succumbed to pecuniary pressures and have taken jobs as illustrators, graphic artists, and teachers - the lady soldiers on - battle along - put your head down and persevere - SAA - explosive material ..
