A Hive For The Buzzin’ Bees

5 October 2025

Participating: Adelle van Zyl, Alain Nortje, Cobus Erasmus, Loeritha Saayman, Christiaan Snyman

A bee hive is a complex structure that serves a highly social society with specialized roles.
It’s efficient communication, much like in human societies, demonstrates similarities in social structures, collective goal, communication networks, and the importance of community well-being for individual and group survival.

The Bee hive consists of shared genetic components for social behaviour, intricate communication through vibrations and chemicals, distinct roles for each individual (queen and workers), and a collective "mind" that operates through consensus and shared information, making the beehive a model for understanding human social organization and resilience.

A Hive for the Buzzin' Bees is a thought-provoking exhibition that draws fascinating parallels between the intricate world of bees and the complexities of human society. Through a dynamic collection of paintings and ceramic works, this exhibition explores how both bees and humans live in tightly-knit communities, rely on teamwork, and contribute to the well-being of a greater whole.
