Back then26 October 2024 Participating: Elwin Buchel Elwin Buchel is a gastroenterologist whose interest in art was sparked at the age of five when his piano teacher suggested to his mother that he try art lessons instead. Soon after that, his mother enrolled him for classes with an Italian art teacher, who taught him how to use watercolour and oil paint. Painting has been a vital part of his life ever since. Much of his early work was inspired by his time as a GP in a rural medical practice in the Eastern Cape. He returned to Pretoria to specialise and spent the next two decades as a senior lecturer at the University of Pretoria Medical Faculty and a senior specialist at the Pretoria Academic Hospital (as it was known then). A new chapter of his life began after he was offered a consultant's position in Abu Dhabi and moved there in 2000. The exposure to new and exciting artistic influences informs his later works, which explore his impressions of middle eastern life and represent the captivating textures of this landscape. Recent paintings depict a visit to Al Mukalla in Yemen. Elwin works in acrylic and oil. 'My paintings reflect the joy of life,' he says. 'They are rich in colour and impressionistic. They reflect a mood and the excitement of discovering new images and perspectives.' Elwin will attend the opening of the exhibition VENUE:ASSOCIATION OF ARTS PRETORIA Address: 173 Mackie Str, Nieuw Muckleneuk, Pretoria Tel: 012 346 3100 / 3110 || Cell: 083 288 5117 Email: artspta@mweb.co.za Gallery Hours: Tue to Fri 09:00 - 17:00.
