 Bell the Cat23 November 2024 Participating: Hugh Byrne Celebrating Byrne's 10th year with the gallery, this exhibition launches a selection of new works by the artist while reflecting on the stylistic evolution of his career. This retrospective includes a selection of never-before-seen photographs and preparatory sketches by the artist, building a rich tapestry of inspiration and contemplation- an intricate creative narrative which underscores this solo showcase.
"There is a quality, or maybe it is even a fundamental characteristic, an essence then, about Byrne's zestful and zingy work –work that never settles, is always shape shifting, continually finding new expressions, persistently embracing opportunity, frequently arguing with what a painting might be, and, more fundamentally, with what painting is – that brings to mind the Japanese word 'asobi'. The word is widely used in everyday Japan, known to everyone, because it speaks to an ambition, if not pursuit, shared by all humanity: play." -Sean O'Toole Byrne relies on gut intuition and curiosity to establish a balance between spontaneity and discipline. Drawing on his studio space, tools, materials, as well as previous artworks as a direct stimulus for the development of new work, his compositions are a response to his environment. This publication marks the launch of Bell the Cat, the first comprehensive retrospective of Hugh Byrne's diverse creative practice. Spanning a decade of the artist's work, the book features completed artworks, exhibition and art fair presentations, as well as preparatory sketches, photography, and studio views, offering a rich insight into the evolution of Byrne's artistic journey. Contributions from Gallery Director Marc Stanes and arts writer Sean O'Toole provide both a close-up and broad perspective on the artist's oeuvre. Books will be available for purchase. |
