Bell the Cat23 November 2024 Participating: Hugh Byrne Celebrating Byrne's 10th year with the gallery, this exhibition launches a selection of new works by the artist while reflecting on the stylistic evolution of his career. This retrospective includes a selection of never-before-seen photographs and preparatory sketches by the artist, building a rich tapestry of inspiration and contemplation- an intricate creative narrative which underscores this solo showcase.
"There is a quality, or maybe it is even a fundamental characteristic, an essence then, about Byrne's zestful and zingy work –work that never settles, is always shape shifting, continually finding new expressions, persistently embracing opportunity, frequently arguing with what a painting might be, and, more fundamentally, with what painting is – that brings to mind the Japanese word 'asobi'. The word is widely used in everyday Japan, known to everyone, because it speaks to an ambition, if not pursuit, shared by all humanity: play." -Sean O'Toole Byrne relies on gut intuition and curiosity to establish a balance between spontaneity and discipline. Drawing on his studio space, tools, materials, as well as previous artworks as a direct stimulus for the development of new work, his compositions are a response to his environment. This exhibition lays bare this creative process, allowing the viewer to engage and feel a part of it. Book Signing with Hugh Byrne
