Life - We Get the Picture

15 October 2021

Life – We Get the Picture is the theme of this year’s Nando’s Creative Exchange exhibition, in partnership with Spier Arts Trust, which opens on 15 October at AVA Gallery in Cape Town and runs until 25 November. The group exhibition displays works by four emerging artists, Adrian Owen, Eric Rantisi, Llise Dodd and Mongezi Ncombo.

The Nando’s Creative Exchange was established in 2011 to recognise emerging, Southern African fine artists who demonstrate exceptional ability. The programme offers select artists exhibition and mentorship opportunities, with art materials sponsorship and an opportunity to have work translated in a different medium in collaboration with the Spier Artisan Studios.  All of this is aimed at developing artists’ professional practice.

“Nando’s is passionate about nurturing and showcasing Southern African creativity. We love sharing Mzansi’s art, design and music talents with the world in a way that makes a positive, meaningful difference,” says Kirsty Niehaus, who heads up the Nando’s Art Initiative.

“Nando’s Creative Exchange is one of five artist development programmes under the auspices of the Nando’s Art Initiative, through which we support more than 350 artists on a regular basis. We’ve been investing in art and artist development since 2001. The artworks in the Nando’s Collection are displayed in 1 200 restaurants across 24 countries, making Nando’s the largest private collector of contemporary southern African art in the world.”

In their exhibition statement, the artists explain that the exhibition theme Life – We Get the Picture “demonstrates that the collective, and artists in general, are challenged with exploring underlying social issues, our vulnerabilities, our strengths, our collective experiences in the uncertainty of the Covid-19 crisis. We do not take for granted our responsibility as artists to explore and investigate, through social commentary, the nature of the human condition.”

This year’s Creative Exchange artists have been mentored by Bretten-Anne Moolman, an experienced artist who has provided curatorial and professional presentation advice to the artists while they have been working towards the exhibition, to enable future independence in approaching galleries professionally and to plan successful art exhibitions.
