![]() The New Kid In Town Turned Thirty22 March 2025 Participating: Philip Badenhorst In 1995, Philip Badenhorst presented a solo exhibition at the Karen McKerron Gallery in Bryanston, Johannesburg entitled 'A New Kid in Town'. Now, thirty years later, he presents a retrospective, and it is obvious that the same symbols and metaphors are still employed: portraits, figures, still lives, abstract motives and signs in spaces with ambiguous meanings. The youthful new kid is now portrayed with an easy self-assurance, stripped of preconceived ideas, tendencies and fads in the art world. His work is more peaceful and communicates inherently a healthy, well-lived world in which the artist still comments on his daily crises of existence rooted in feelings of loneliness, desolation and alienation. It is well worth noting that Philip Badenhorst is one of South Africa’s most celebrated painters positioning himself in the broader arena of New Romantic Expressionism. The exhibition will be opened by Pieter van Heerden.
