Left Field

25 October 2018 - 17 November 2018

Left Field navigates mental landscapes and attempts to give form to fragmentary information. Torr is currently working on her Masters degree in Visual Arts at UJ exploring the theme of tacit knowledge, a type of knowledge that one intuits instantly, but often struggles to articulate into words. Her research also deals with theories of left and right brain functions and the act of balancing intuition and rationality in the creative process.

Left Field lays the foundations for a visual first chapter in Torr’s dissertation. She recognises that she first has to make something before being able to understand what it might mean. Furthermore, she poses that understanding might not even be necessary in the process of communicating ideas - that they can function quite comfortably, or perhaps thrive in unarticulated spaces.
