LETTERS TO MYSELF

14 February 2019

I find it interesting that our evolution as a species has brought us many tools which actually separate us from our nature. One of the principal tools is organized language, especially the written word, and it has such a suffocating nature, tending to limit everything named and described to a particular quality. Much like a knife and fork separates us from the tactile experience of food or a wheelbarrow separates us from experiencing the full weight of its load, language separates us from our deepest emotions.

Words describe how we feel, but cannot express or describe the depth of our emotion. Internal dialogue shares the burden of our emotion by pivoting the emotion on a fulcrum of language.

In this series of artworks, I use abstract mark making and a written language inexplicable even to myself. They are letters from my spirit to my consciousness, a way to get back in touch with myself without the hinderance of the prescribed, but simply of what I personally find complete.
