Things on / under the table

11 April 2019

Things on/under the table explores two ongoing themes that I’ve been working with for the last six months. My work explores flowers and floral arrangements and the manner in which they communicate a wide spectrum of human emotions, from feelings of loss and sorrow, to those of regret, love or happiness. Similarly, dogs feel and evoke the same spectrum of emotions, and the personalities we create for them are often a means to project what us humans are feeling.
Adrie le Roux is an artist and illustrator based in Pretoria, South Africa. Her work deals with the subtle (and sometimes not so subtle) emotions and social pressures that we navigate on a daily basis. Awkwardness, compassion, sarcasm and sadness are often found in her illustrations, paintings and collages. Adrie works across a variety of media, and has a special love for dogs. She lectures full time at the University of Johannesburg, and manages Collaborate Community Projects, a not for profit that creates community authored wordless picture books with the aim of cultivating a culture and love of reading in South Africa regardless of literacy level or language preference.
