Almost No Memory

5 March 2020

In Almost no memory, Preller engages her personal archive of photographs, in paintings that are as much about memory as the condition of forgetting/the erasure of memory. The exhibition reflects Preller’s continued interest in personal photographic archives made public in paintings refracted through the prism of the past and the camera’s lens. In her new works, more so than in previous work, the ephemerality of memory is made visible by her handling of paint; by figures that merge with the background, by the erasure of details that echo the erasure of memory. The title of the exhibition, Almost no memory, implies something of the elusiveness of memory and the spectral, haunting nature of the photograph.
While Preller is registered for a PhD in Art and Design at the University of Johannesburg, this exhibition is independent from, and does not form part of her doctoral studies.
Karin Preller lives and works in Johannesburg.  After a relatively brief career in law, she completed a BA(FA) (cum laude) at Unisa and an MA(FA) (cum laude) at the University of the Witwatersrand, lecturing in Art History at UNISA and other tertiary institutions. At present she is registered for a PhD in Art and Design at the University of Johannesburg while continuing her work as an artist. Preller has participated in numerous group shows and has had a number of solo exhibitions: Snapshots at Gordart Gallery in 2007, Aperture at Fried Contemporary in 2008, Stills at Artspace (now Lizamore and Associates) in 2009, City and Suburban at the Standard Bank Gallery in 2010, Just above the mantelpiece at Artspace (now Lizamore and Associates) in 2013 and Stilled lives at Lizamore and Associates in 2015, amongst others.
