Minotaur Series 11b

“Young Vision 2004” curated by Kay Hassan at the Alliance Francaise 12-25 November 2004 (Two performances held on the 12th and the 15th November) Photographic Credit: Mika le Roux and Abrie Fourie

  • Here the ‘pencil’ figure served more as a sculptural element in the space: I walked around the gallery environment occasionally standing/sitting completely still – sometimes next to a group of people in conversation or isolated in an empty space, for example. These silent moments would literally be ruptured when I came alive again – suddenly shaking the pencil suit producing both sound and movement.

I also included a new element to the suit – the vast amount of red ribbons hanging from the headpiece. The red ribbon is a well-known symbol for the HIV/Aids awareness campaign in SA. Duration: 1 hour

  • For the second performance at the exhibition I simply entered the space searching for any white wall space left in the gallery. I then proceeded to throw myself against the wall repeatedly, shattering the pencils on the suit and only moving on to a new space once the wall became littered with gray pencil marks resultant from the repetitive action. I repeated the action of total of 5 times in different spaces in the gallery. Near the end of the performance the wall became blood-streaked as the sharp pencils started taking its toll on my body as well. Duration: 1 hour
