Artist Statement
My starting point of exploration was the image of a fragile rosebud. The imagery is a metaphor for the painful processing of matters of the soul. The need to form a thicker skin is conveyed by the construction of layers of protection like a shield. Instead of creating this armour from harsh, thick materials such as bark, I have chosen to create layer upon layer of soft materials which imitate rose petals. This delicate process is about allowing the sensitivity to show and the tightly folded rosebud refers to the need to blossom but also to protect. One is constantly searching for inner strength which will enable this blossoming and the works are about the process of shedding of outer skin which allows new skin to emerge and strengthen the rose.
Because this metaphorical rose is trapped I have used acrylic boxes as to express this state. Likewise a number of different materials such as fabric, latex, gauze, bandages, rubber, and paper are used to refer to issues such as camouflage, hiding, insecurity and sexuality. All these materials signify the personality which is evolving as it proceeds on a multifaceted journey; at times challenging and at others, liberating.
