THE ARTIST`S PUBLICATION: NEW AND INDEPENDENT PRESS IN CAPE TOWN

Few publications are centered around the work of artists, and the artist`s voice is often mediated through the journalist. In light of this, how can publications actively support the work of South African artists` Or, how can publications created by artists shift conversations around the intersections of art making and representation?

The Artist`s Publication: New and Independent press in Cape Town is a panel discussion focused on independent and new approaches to artist`s publications. The panel will host a number of arts professionals currently contributing to the development of new and alternative press in the city.

CAPE TOWN - WARREN EDITIONS
REDUCTIVE WOODCUT WORKSHOP
6 May - 27 May 2017 from 09:00 - 15:00
In the reductive-woodcut workshop an image is simplified to the essential tones. To do so the participant will carve and print one woodblock successively to represent the identified tones. The instructor will teach this technique while sharing carving tips and demonstrating the method of printing with ink onto paper via an etching press and printing by hand. Afterward, the participant can continue practicing the technique at home because no press is needed.

The workshop will be hosted on four consecutive Saturdays.

Cost: R3 200 (includes VAT and materials). The workshop can only host 8 participants.

BLOEMFONTEIN - OLIEWENHUIS ART MUSEUM
SCULPTING PORCELAIN: HAND MODELLING AND CARVING WORKSHOP WITH TONI PRETORIUS

Oliewenhuis Art Museum is proud to announce that the celebrated ceramic artist, Toni Pretorius. This workshop specifically focuses on the fine art of modelling a pendant-sized piece of porcelain from a two-dimensional image.

The workshop includes an informative discussion on the medium itself. The practical element of the workshop will focus on observing and recreating natural textures and shapes.

Each participant will produce a finished product which they can then keep for themselves. Points to be addressed will include tips on working with porcelain; how it differs from other clays and what effects can be achieved at the various drying stages of the clay. Also how to mimic textures (with a focus on organic textures), creating focal points for a three-dimensional work, understanding how the medium works, what it will and won't allow, and how to deal with breakages and other setbacks.

Anyone interested in learning more about the fine art of porcelain sculpting is welcome to attend.

The workshop fee includes porcelain, the firing of the final pieces and tea-time refreshments.

Attendees must please provide their own ceramic sculpting tools, a fine tipped craft knife, and a soft small painting brush. Attendees are welcome to bring their own lunch box or order from The Terrace Restaurant on the premises.
