TROMPE L`OEIL (THE ART OF DECEPTION)

The artist describes his works as still lifes in front of the picture plane, using Trompe L'oeil which means 'to deceive the eye'. It's used to describe a style of painting that uses shading and perspective to make a two-dimensional painting appear to be truly three-dimensional - at least for a few moments. He states that it is painting from life and other painterly conventions.

Since childhood, De Wet has been fascinated by pictures. They were magical appearances in books. Pictures made ideas visible. He became aware of the idea of pictorial language and pictorial conventions. Visual joy comes from seeing, understanding, and using visual language.

In this exhibition De Wet strives to free the images from the bondage behind the picture plane to make them seem to exist in the viewer's space in front of the picture. To achieve this, he uses Trompe L'oeil (fooling the eye). This method makes people believe that they are looking at a real thing and not a painted depiction.
