Imaginaria22 June 2024 Participating: Christiaan Diedericks, Judy Woodborne Live music by Lindo M
Wine will be served and coffee shop on site. New perspectives in contemporary printmaking
Two artists come together for this exhibition, both leading names in the South African art realm. For this particular show, they explore unique and unconventional printmaking. The result of these works has an ethereal and dreamlike quality and both artists achieve incredible details that draw the viewer in. The delicate nature of the works seem traditionally feminine but are very bold and have a strong, commanding presence.
Woodborne pushes the boundaries of printmaking by combining it with papercutting and unconventional media in order to achieve 3 dimensional works (each different from the last) that break the tradition of repetition in printmaking. Conceptually Judy plays with alternative history and mythology, her work asks important questions about womanhood in these contexts. Many works in this series depict Frida Kahlo, one of the most prolific icons in feminism and art.
Diedericks also plays with new media in printmaking as he explores digital tools and forms of creation. He is also contemporary in concept as he battles with socio-political issues surrounding the oppression of minority groups and invites the viewer to evaluate their own stance on women's rights, racial biases and most of all the works challenge the patriarchal West and it's obsession with destruction and war.
