Two Solo Exhibitions

26 October 2023

Participating:  Alexis Schofield and Carolina Salinas

Alexis Schofield | Impressions, 2023

The show presents a collection of figurative observational scenes. These paintings are inspired by the ethos of the Impressionists: to capture not only the likeness of the scene but also the implicit atmosphere within it. For Schofield, the atmosphere foregrounded in his work is that of social alienation and feelings of discomfort. The paintings are stylistically distinct in their use of dark tones, negative space, and expressive mark-making.

Schofield, born in 1982, is a painter who grew up in Pretoria and currently lives and works in Cape Town, South Africa. He studied design at The Open Window in Pretoria and graduated in 2010, starting painting in 2017. His work searches for the subliminal South African aesthetic, looking to the face brick suburbs and strip malls for inspiration. He primarily uses found images as reference and he is thematically interested in perceptions of belonging and alienation played out in the suburban landscape - looking closely at the idea of the outsider, subjects separated from the collective, separate from their environment, those truly alone. Impressions, 2023 is Schofield's second solo presentation at 99 Loop.

Carolina Salinas | Places, real or imagined

The show consists of vibrant painterly works by the artist. In them, she depicts people and places through bold colour schemes, evoking a sense of warmth, stillness and familiarity.

Salinas is a Chilean-Australian artist, living and working in Cape Town, South Africa. Her love of colour, pattern, form and the relationships between them emanate through her eye-catching paintings. Over the years, she has used a variety of media to hone her style but her most recent pieces use oil paint on canvas as their mode of expression. In her practice, Salinas is driven by her curiosity and fascination with identity - particularly that of women and their place in the world. Places, real or imagined is the second solo presentation by the artist at 99 Loop.
