![]() Carbo animalis: Finding the Ancestors5 November 2020 Participating: Ann Gollifer The entanglements of history, place, identity and belonging are at the heart of Gollifer's (b. 1960) work. Drawing on her Carribean, British and African heritage, Gollifer reflects on shared histories of conquest and colonialism, and human relationships with nature. Carbo animalis, or bone char, is a porous black granular material produced by charring animal bones. It is one of Ann’s mediums and - alongside her use of watercolours that reference ancient linkages with ochre - speaks to transformations of states, pathways between past and present, and the intangible connections between the spirit and the real.
