For Some, the Pathway to Education Lies Between Thorns

14 March 2026 - 9 April 2026

Participating: Peter E. Clarke

curated by Chepape Makgato.

For Some, the Pathway to Education Lies Between Thorns is a travelling solo exhibition featuring works by renowned South African artist, writer, and poet Peter E. Clarke. Presented through a collaboration between WHAG and the UNISA Art Gallery. The exhibition brings together Clarke’s linocuts, woodcuts, paintings, and watercolours drawn from both institutions’ permanent collections.

Born in Simon’s Town in 1929 and later forcibly relocated to Ocean View under apartheid, Clarke forged an extraordinary artistic career despite limited access to formal education. His lifelong contribution to the arts earned him numerous national honours, including the Order of Ikhamanga (Silver) (2005) and a Lifetime Achievement Award (2010).

The exhibition title is taken from Clarke’s 2008 artwork reflecting on the struggles of children in rural communities who travelled long distances to access education. These themes continue to echo powerfully within South Africa’s contemporary higher education landscape, where issues of access, inequality, and mobility remain at the forefront of national discourse.

The exhibition will be officially opened by Prof S. Tyali, Director of the School of Arts, College of Human Sciences,  UNISA, and we would be honoured by your presence.

We look forward to welcoming you to this significant celebration of artistic legacy, social commentary, and cultural reflection.
