Irma Stern NUDES 1916 - 1965

26 April 2022

Participating: Irma Stern

Throughout her life, Irma Stern depicted nudes to give visual form to her own views and feelings. The nude was a respected subject in European art for over four hundred years. ‘Nude’ is different from ‘naked’ – which means simply not wearing clothes – in that it was understood to represent the height of beauty, perfect and ideal. Curated by Emeritus Professor Michael Godby in collaboration with the Irma Stern Museum, the Irma Stern Trust and loans from private institutions, this exhibition shown at UCT Irma Stern Museum in 2021, traces changes in Stern’s treatment of the nude in different media over her long working life.
