Agter die Spykergordyn is an exhibition of animated films, drawings, and prints created using a pinscreen.
Pinscreen animation is an animation technique that employs a rare animation tool: a screen filled with movable pins that can be pushed in or out by pressing an object against the screen. The screen is illuminated from the side so that the pins cast shadows onto the white surface. The artist controls and manipulates these shadows to create images. The technique enables the artist to produce animation resembling etchings or engravings, creating a range of textural effects that are difficult to achieve with any other animation technique..
The pinscreen animation technique is considered one of the most complex, demanding, and time-consuming techniques in animation. Consequently, it is also extremely rare. Until 2015, only two pinscreens existed, and only three artists worldwide had created films using them. In 2018, a Frenchman—Alexandre Noyer—redesigned the pinscreen using new technology and materials. There are now approximately 20 such instruments in existence, and Grobler’s pinscreen—the Akasia—is the only one in the Southern Hemisphere. Grobler has been working on the pinscreen since July 2023.
Grobler will be exhibiting some scraperboard drawings created over the past two decades as introduction to his pinscreen aesthetic. The exhibition will focus primarily on his pinscreen films and 2D printed works related to his films. This entails a series of pinscreen drawings: Unique work created as individual artworks directly on the pinscreen or composited from elements of filmed frames, as well as limited editions of freeze-frames from the films.
Grobler has produced a series of films over the past three years. Two of the films - I haven’t told my garden yet and Pictures for piano (1) have already toured quite extensively on the international festival circuit. I haven’t told my garden yet won the Dutch Poetry Film Prize in 2024, and Pictures for piano (1) received an award for Best Experimental Film at the Soundance Film Festival in Barcelona.
A new music film, Nagmusiek, featuring piano performances by Wessel van Wyk, will have its public premiere at the opening of the exhibition.
