restrictions and edition size. The portfolio exchange is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for participants
to have their work displayed in public and private collections all over the world. The Arts Company
Soweto (TACS) invited 25 artists to participate in the call for such an exchange portfolio. The portfolio
carries uniqueness, it focused on non-printmakers and few printmakers, to begin with. Therefore,
allowing a shared value among the artist for an opportunity to share/exchange with each other.
TACS the current ongoing issues as per the Covid-19 pandemic titled Joburg 2020/2021. Covid
19/2020 pandemic brought about a shift to the reality that each one of us could not escape.
Conforming to the standard of living was a new way of living. It changed routines that most of us had
to give in. There were serious disruptions in day-to-day life, businesses, world trade, and
movements. The artworks created were to highlight some key challenges that have been brought
about by covid-19 and how the artists have been affected by the ramifications of the pandemic.
This invitation drew artists from a variety of disciplines, including sculpture, multimedia, painters, and
non-printmakers. Artists were given months of preparation time in 2020/2021 to create artworks in
response to certain challenges and the affects individually.
In its fullness, the portfolio exchange illuminates key issues that the pandemic brought forward. The
prints carry peculiar weights and have translated differently to some artist history is preserved and
concealed. The storytelling offers hope to the consumers of the artwork, and to the ambassadors of
the natural world, the work has taken shape to become what it’s supposed to be a reflection of
themselves and their surroundings.
The Portfolio Exchange is an archival process that not only includes the production of the prints but
also incorporates a collection of essays from various writers. TACS is also in the process of creating a
publication to document the entire process and further engage the idea of creating an artistic legacy
beyond the pandemic.
