The studio is a sacred space

19 April 2020

In March 2020 Covid-19 hit South Africa. In April, we decided to cancel our regular our Open Studio event and replace it with an online exhibition. This exhibition seeks to explore the work of a diverse set of artists working from August House, an artist studio space located in the CDB of Johannesburg whilst celebrating the important of studio spaces as a place that facilitates artist endeavor, experimentation, community and support.
At its heart, a studio space, is an escape from outside distractions, an environment fosters experimentation, problem-solving, and creative growth. The diversity of artists brings with it a diversity of skills, knowledge, culture and experience.
"The studio is a sacred place," declares artist El Anatsui, "that you come to do some reflection and thinking."
This online exhibition is a presentation by Artists who have studios at August House in response to having to cancel our open studios due to the covid-19 virus and the current lockdown.
This exhibition will allow you to see and buy new works created by these artists. This is a new experience for all of us and we hope that you embrace this new way of viewing art.
