Eclipse (2002)

"Eclipse" is a 'memorial' to the innocent men, women and children who are left in the dark by a lack of compassion and hope due to famine, war and epidemics.

The work is constructed in van der Merwe's signature medium of rusted tin cans. The artist uses his medium conceptually - the tin can is used to preserve food: its degeneration symbolises man's vulnerability and his fight against deterioration.
