10 Questions with Major Ndlovu

Major Ndlovu's work questions the personal freedom of figures/people in their daily duties in his community. He looks around positive and negative sides of neglected chores and comment to those affairs.

"From my childhood I grew up in a community where everyone is busy trying to maintain life, in the morning and afternoon they busy in several ways. That makes me wonder as we live in a free country, if we feel this freedom as individuals."

If not art, what would you do?

Poetry.

Where does your inspiration come from?

Thought, Dreams, Visions, and life experiences.

What's your secret obsession?

Spending time alone in my private space.

Do you have a creative muse?

No.

Which creative medium would you love to pursue but haven't yet?

Sculpture.

Favorite time of the day?

In the morning, where I wake up with a fresh mind. Everything looks fresh and new.

What is your most important artist tool? Is there something you can't live without in your studio?

I would say music is my most important tool. I struggle a lot to work without it, and a white candle.

Favourite or most inspirational place in South Africa?

For me I always go with rural areas or any village. It makes me feel so close and connected with nature. Hearing those birds singing and other different voices of other creatures, it’s natural and peaceful, and I like peace.

What, in your opinion, is the hardest step in creating an artwork?

Working under pressure. I’m really not comfortable by working in a short time period, or working under certain rules, because I believe that as an artist you should explore, and allow your artwork to take you wherever it want to take you too, and learn from it.

What's the best creative advice you've ever received?

Be true to yourself.
