TAF23 shines colourful light on contemporary South African art

Posted on 3 August 2023

The 11th edition of Turbine Art Fair took place from 27 - 30 July 2023 at the transformed the upper level of Hyde Park Corner featuring bold colourful spaces of art.

The focus continues to be on emerging artists and mid-career artists as well as emerging galleries who make innovative use of non-traditional art exhibition spaces. The fair featured 30 exhibitors and 10 special projects. Emerging and affordable artworks were still the main draw card with great art available to both seasoned art collectors as well as those starting the art collecting journey.

"TAF has always been a sensorial Fair, where the experience of art becomes an event, not just a passive viewing, or a simple 'fair'. The TAF location has always been at the forefront of the experience," says Founder Glynis Hyslop. "We are known as a fair that takes art out of 'traditional' venues to enable art to be experienced, not just browsed. It is a place for new voices, and new perspectives making art accessible, undaunting and fun! We believe we have curated an innovative and exciting art experience that will take art fairs in South Africa to the next level."

Carve X stand featuring sculpture by Collen Maswanganyi

The 2023 special projects programme saw the return of long-standing TAF Talks, TAF Talent and Usha Seejarim as this year's TAF Capsule Featured Artist. Seejarim's A Bouquet of Mother's Milk featured over 1000 iron bases made into intricate lilies taking 6 months to produce. The sculptures were available to be purchased individually or as a group. Other scuptural installations focused on wood as a medium such as Collen Maswanganyi's Carve X and sculptures in aged Deodar Cedar by Sandra Maytham-Bailey at the IBI Gallery stand.

This year, TAF provided a visual sensorial experience enclosed with contemporary South African art that offered fair goers a snapshot of current emerging South African art and gave collectors a chance to purchase new art at affordable prices. We look forward to seeing what the 12th edition of TAF has to bring.
