King Sekhukhune

King Sekhukhune

King Sekhukhune (1814 – 1882) was the leader of the Bapedi. He rose to rule through diplomatic marriages and force. As the leader of the Marota empire, he had men work on farms and in mines and the money earned was used to buy guns. He defended his territory and people from the encroaching European influence. Using military wiles, King Sekhukhune led his people to win great amounts of land. His strategy resulted in famous battles between the Boers and British alike.

King Sekhukhune was murdered by his half-brother, Mampuru on the 13th of August, 1882.
