Bitterbessie Dagbreek (2010)
In these works I wonder about the way we have become obsessed with tools of communication. These works plays with the fetishisation of technology and the alleged decay of human relationships as it is transferred more and more into a digital sphere. It draws from Hieronymus Bosch’s Garden of Earthly delights to present an "evolution of miscommunication". The Blackberry (smartphone) trend enables users to be connected all the time with access to all forms of information – social networks, email and internet any time of the day. We have become an over connected society but it does not necessarily represent a well communicated society as certain as information increases making it more difficult to search and navigate. The title is derived from the same titled poem by Afrikaans poet Ingrid Jonker which is essentially about a miscommunication and relationship break down between two lovers. Bitterbessie Dagbreek translated into English literally means bitter berry dawn.
