Gregory Kerr returns to Johannesburg after 15-Year with ‘Tangential
Histories’ at Denzil’s and Jo Gallery JOHANNESBURG, March 2026 – After more than a decade away from the Johannesburg solo circuit, acclaimed artist and educator Gregory Kerr returns with Tangential Histories, a collection of 21 oil paintings that capture the "bricolage" of a decade spent in the studio. The exhibition opens on 7 March 2026,18:30 at the prestigious Denzil’s and Jo Gallery in Parktown north. Kerr`s work has long occupied the fluid, "multisemic" space between figuration and abstraction. Tangential Histories represents a dialogue between the artist's technical discipline—utilising traditional mediums and time-honoured processes—and the spontaneous "noise" of modern life: podcasts, student critiques, and the wandering imagination. "The painting is a beast that picks up and puts down according to pleasure and self indulgence," says Kerr. From the weathered simplicity of a dog to the archaeological layers of works like Towards a Hierarchy of Needs, the collection invites viewers to stop searching for a single narrative and instead experience the "tangential" nature of thought.
