Pareidolia, a new solo exhibition of oil paintings by multidisciplinary artist Justine Mahoney, will open at Southern Guild Cape Town on 12 Feburary 2026. Marking Mahoney’s first fully-realised body of oil-on-canvas works, the exhibition signals a bold expansion of the South African artist’s visual language, long articulated through her sculptural forms. Pareidolia opens just ahead of the 13th edition of the Investec Cape Town Art Fair, taking place from 19–22 February 2026.
Conceptually rooted in Posthumanist philosophy and Poststructuralist theory, Pareidolia emerges from a year-long period of ritual, research, and material enquiry. Mahoney’s phantasmagorical figures collapse the hierarchical distinctions between human and non-human, between plant, animal, and organic life. Bodies entwine and intermingle, limbs morphing into vegetal and biomorphic configurations that echo the fluid entanglements which shape our world.
Furthering Mahoney’s ongoing contemplation of what it means to be human, Pareidolia invites us to consider the vulnerability, interdependence, and speculative possibilities of alternative modes of being.
