Where I’ve Been, I Remain

Opening: 20 June 2026 at 11:00 - 20 June 2026

Participating: Vutomi Fame Sithole

This exhibition explores the emotional connection between people and their worn shoes, using them as symbols of memory, experience, and identity. Through worn shoes, I reflect on how everyday objects quietly carry traces of the lives we have lived. Scuffs, creases, stains, and marks become evidence of movement through life, holding stories of struggle, resilience, growth, and survival.
In this body of work, shoes become more than objects we wear. They act as witnesses to personal journeys, carrying the weight of places travelled, emotions felt, and moments experienced. The relationship between human presence and the worn object allows hidden narratives to emerge through texture, wear, and time.
The title Where I’ve Been, I Remain reflects the idea that our experiences stay with us long after we move forward. Every journey leaves a mark, shaping who we are and how we see ourselves. Through this exhibition, I invite viewers to reflect on their own experiences and find familiarity within these shared human traces.
At the centre of my practice is a desire to honour imperfection and vulnerability. I am drawn to the beauty found within worn shoes because they reflect the honesty of being human. Ultimately, this work encourages closeness, empathy, and reflection, reminding us that even the most ordinary objects can hold deeply personal stories.
