In 2008, Jessica Hilltout left Brussels for Cape Town with a Hasselblad, 300 rolls of film and the curiosity of:
What does football mean across the African Continent? Over nine months, she travelled across the continent with no fixed plan, first in an old VW Beetle and later in a converted Nissan Vanette. Moving through cities, towns and open fields, she photographed football at grassroots level as the game revealed itself from place to place.
Throughout the journey, she exchanged manufactured footballs for handmade ones, returning with 35 balls that came to represent the essence of the trip and the heart of the project.
