Residual presence is an exhibition of paintings where the very absence of humans in the scenes strongly suggests their lingering presence. This Romantic idea of a place or object acting as a repository and metaphor for human thoughts, feelings and spiritual intuitions, as well as memory, belongs to a long tradition. It is the idea that the inanimate is animated by our emotional and imaginative projections.
