Exxaro Trophy Unveiled The Exxaro Trophy was unveiled at the launch of this year’s Absa Cape Epic in Johannesburg on 6 February 2014. Created by Lwandiso Njara, protégé of up-and-coming sculptor Angus Taylor, the trophy will be awarded to the overall winning team of the Exxaro Jersey. Says Taylor: “The trophy depicts two Exxaro mountain bikers infused with a mountain bike consciousness consisting of mechanical cogs/gears; a consciousness that reflects commitment and the joy inherent in goal achievement.” It resembles the transformation or progression of an ordinary young potential star from the township into a dedicated mountain biker. Says Njara: “The trophy symbolises the act of teamwork, the energy, determined effort and passion required in order to complete the Absa Cape Epic. The trophy depicts a small coal cutter used in the Exxaro underground mines. The trophy is constructed of mediums such as coal, iron and bronze.”
Presidency invests in young sculptor's work
A sculpture by a third-year Fine and Applied Arts student, Faculty of the Arts, Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) was sold to the Presidency in less than a week after he had been named the runner-up in this year's PPC Young Concrete Sculptor Awards. A thrilled Lwandiso Njara (22) says that he is very pleased with the recognition and that it will stand him in good stead on his way to establish a name for himself as an artist. "The sculpture symbolises the struggles of the working man frustrated with his condition and the violence, intimidation and disruption that arises from it," says Lwandiso, who hails from the Libode Village near Umtata in the Eastern Cape. He says that he started drawing at a young age and that after finishing school decided to follow his passion of becoming an artist. Lwandiso will install the work at President Jacob Zuma's Pretoria residence, Mahlamba Ndlopfu.
Talented Njara wins
Lwandiso Njara is one of several talented local sculptors who relish every opportunity they get to speak their mind using various materials. Born in Libode in Eastern Cape Njara's creativity was finally recognised when he became runner-up in this year's PPC Cement Sculpture Competition. He was among the young artists given an opportunity to showcase their talent through the affordable and versatile medium of concrete.The judges deemed the piece a well-executed sculpture incorporating an interesting combination of various media and high artistic values. "The piece was inspired by the industrial action that took place this year in the urban areas." he says. "I followed the metro bus drivers who were on strike. | |
