TWENTY: Art in time of Democracy

Posted on 16 April 2015

TWENTY: Art in time of Democracy, curated by Gordon Froud (Senior Lecturer at the University of Johannesburg) on behalf of the University of Johannesburg, showcases historical and contemporary works that look at a slice of South African life and experience over the first 20 years of democracy. The exhibition of contemporary South African art was first exhibited at the Appalachian State University, North Carolina in July 2014 for six months.

The exhibition returns to South Africa and opens at the Pretoria Art Museum on 9 May 2015, from where it will move to the University of Johannesburg Art Gallery in July. It will also form the basis of the South African exhibition at the 6th International Beijing Biennale, co-curated by Professor Karen Von Veh of the University of Johannesburg.

A broad range of artists and works were selected to narrate these experiences and demonstrate the depth of talent and commentary of contemporary South African Art. Exhibition themes include the influence of crafts on South African art, HIV/AIDS, photography of the last 20 years, the Mandela years, human rights, land and land issues, identity and resistance art, then and now.

This highly acclaimed, monumental exhibition features more than 200 works by 115 artists in a variety of mediums, including drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, printmaking, video and digital art and collage. In keeping with Froud's curatorial style termed "democratic curatorship", he included works by luminaries such as William Kentridge, Diane Victor, David Koloane, Mary Sibande and Kagiso Pat Moutloa alongside emergent future stars like Jaco van Schalkwyk, Mbali Dhlamini, Vusi Beauchamp, Bevan de Wet and Phumulani Ntuli.

The exhibition runs at the Pretoria Art Museum from 9 May 2015 at 12:00 until 21 June 2015.
