Artist Biography

Nina was born in 1953 in Robertson, South Africa. After school she obtained a BA Degree in Art from the University of Stellenbosch.

Nina taught art at high schools in the Cape Peninsula for five years before starting to paint full time in 1983. In 1986 she had her first solo exhibition at the Dorp Street Gallery in Stellenbosch.

Since 1986 Nina has had many exhibitions, the most important being in Italy in December 2005, when she was invited to take part in the Florence Biennale. Over the years she has also painted many commissions for people, local and overseas.

In 1997 Nina painted her first commission for playwright and comedian Pieter-Dirk Uys. Since then she has had lots of fun capturing his alter-ego, tannie Evita Bezuidenhout, in the styles of the Great Masters. In March 2010 the ‘Evita-paintings’ were on exhibition at the Sasol Art Museum in Stellenbosch as part of the Stellenbosch University Word Festival. By the end of 2012 there were 27 paintings! The paintings can be seen in the crafts-building at Evita se Perron in Darling or go towww.evita.co.za , photo galleries, Tannie Evita’s Master Collection.

In 2012 Nina painted a portrait of Marlene le Roux, director of Artscape theatre and disability rights activist, for the German-Africa Foundation.

Nina works in oil on canvas and sometimes paints the frames onto the canvas. Her subject matter varies from still life to wild animals, from landscape to people. Nina is influenced by the vibrancy, adventure and magic of Africa!
