Droogpan

The artwork, Droogpan, can be explained as being earthworks created at the site of an old diamond mine in the North West. The site is divided into three areas dealing with the concept of thankfulness and offering.

At each site a different type of space are created with reference to traditional methods of offering. Against the rock face of the mine words are carved that means to facilitate the process of contemplation.

The words are written in Setswana, Dutch, English and Afrikaans and represent the people that worked and lived in the area.

Offering fires were made from mealies and Eucalyptus leaves because of its nourishing and medicinal significance in the area, the burning fires also filled the entire cavity of the mine with smoke that smelled of Eucalyptus oil and created a mystical atmosphere.

Essentially the space attempts to facilitate the viewer in the process of reflection on the past and present life and where the viewer must constantly think of the action of giving thanks.
