The marks left on the body represent the history of the body.; it is literally a showcase of the tangible identity. The skin becomes a landscape filled with roadmaps. The body or more specifically the skin is a symbolic narrative that covers the uncompromising and unapologetic rawness underneath. Not only is the skin the largest organ of the body, but it is the primal attire for our corporeality.

The skin is loaded with possibilities and often serves as a social, political or psychological surface which may be utilised as a propaganda tool. It is as concealing as it is revealing. It hides our ailments and keeps the horror of the visceral body in reserve. More than this, it is often construed as the chief measure of flawlessness and beauty. Identity is bound to one’s skin. Marks, blemishes and/or old incisions are trapped in it – serving as a dermalogical timeline. Clothes are often interpreted as the body’s second skin- the alter ego of the primal skin (and often an illusion). The real skin finds it hard to lie and cannot but help to adhere to the age old motto, “Beauty is only s(k)in deep”.
