Rendezvous

Rendezvous
Curated by Paul Boulitreau, wearable art started with a fashion show in which the art works were modeled at UJ and then exhibited at Aardklop. The work made for this exhibition consisted of a life size plaster of paris bodycast and photographs of me holding the cast. The origin of this work arose from the idea that “Our skin is our gut, our gut is our skin”. As the cells in the miniscule human embryo unfold and entwine in new patterns and maps of infinitismally complex kinds, the skin establishes itself as the great organ of consciousness. It waits to receive the impressions of the air, the sounds of creation, to give back the expressions and gestures of another. The narrative of our existence is not only pressed and scratched, moulded into the skin, but it gives the very elements of the narrative which our consciousness longs for. Each wisp and wave of the web of consciousness is singing to the touch of its beautiful lover, the skin.
The skin becomes a landscape filled with roadmaps. The body or more specifically the skin is a symbolic narrative which covers the uncompromising and unapologetic rawness underneath. Not only is the skin the largest organ of the body, but it is the primal attire for our corporeality. The work tries to capture the intimate connection between the neural circuitry in the body and the way that feelings are first felt through the skin then turned into emotions which miraculously turn into consciousness through the web of nerves, bones, muscles, sinews, energy in an endless loop.
